Mennonite Housing Makes an Impact

For more than four decades, Mennonite Housing has provided affordable housing for families and senior citizens with low incomes.

Housing & Services for People in Need

Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation Services, Inc., (MHRSI) is for people who cannot obtain home repair or decent housing in any other way. For over 40 years, our organization has been providing affordable housing options for the low-income and elderly residents of Wichita, Kansas. During its history, our organization has built hundreds of new houses and repaired thousands of older homes.

Mennonite Housing History

In 1975, local Mennonite Churches had a vision for making the world better for senior citizens on fixed incomes by repairing homes of elderly people no longer able to do so themselves. Volunteers from these congregations formed the Mennonite Voluntary Service Unit (MVSU) and began operating from a small garage in the midtown area of Wichita. In response, the City of Wichita boosted the group's efforts by providing a new van and construction tools.

In March of 1977, the MVSU was incorporated into a 501(c)3 community-based, non-profit organization. In addition, the name of the organization was changed to Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation Services, Inc. (MHRSI). Since that time, Mennonite Housing has been guided by a Board of Directors.

Although the core of our mission has remained the same, the organization has continuously expanded its horizons.

Since 1975, MHRSI has helped working families buy their own homes by providing financial and educational assistance. Our Self-Help Program allows families to participate in the building of their future home.

Since 1991, Mennonite Housing has provided many seniors with the opportunity to live independently in pleasant, affordable apartments in one of 12 Senior Residences.

MHRSI Helps Communities

For over 40 years, MHRSI has been a dynamic movement in the community, each year assisting hundreds of families in Kansas communities. In fact, since our inception, MHRSI has conducted repairs on over 1200 homes and built over 500 new homes in Wichita and surrounding areas.

The needs of Wichita residents for decent, affordable housing constantly grows and changes. Mennonite Housing will continue to address these concerns. However, only with help from local churches, businesses, foundations and individuals, will we be able to successfully tackle the challenges that face our community.
